Holland has three main types of institutions:

  1. The universities of applied sciences (hogescholen) offer programmes that focus on the application of arts and sciences.
  2. The research universities in Holland educate students in academic study and research.
  3. Institutes for international education (IE) offer advanced training and courses in a wide range of fields. Most of these institutes are part of a research university.

Institutions other than research universities, universities of applied sciences or institutes for international education may also offer international degree programmes or short courses.

Upon completion of the undergraduate phase, students will obtain a bachelor’s degree and after completing the postgraduate phase they receive a master’s degree.

Research universities and universities of applied sciences award both types of degrees. Institutes for International Education offer master’s programmes, but no bachelor’s programmes.

The Dutch institutions offer more than just bachelor’s or master’s programmes. In this database, you will also find MBA programmes, PhD programmes, courses to gain a certificate or diploma and other types of courses.
