Course description

Qualification Bachelor
Field of study Mathematics, natural sciences and computer science
Course summary Aeres UAS Almere offers an English-language one year programme for students interested in a career as an assistant breeder or a research assistant at a seed company or in seed production.
Course description The world population and demand for food is growing. In combination with loss and deterioration of arable land this leads to increased pressure on crop production. Furthermore, there is increased demand for sustainable production and local growers have to deal with climate change and growing importance of water management. Therefore the agricultural sector needs cultivars with higher yield, with resistance to pests and diseases and tolerance to abiotic factors like salt, temperature and drought. This minor is set up for those who are interested in a career as an assistant breeder or a research assistant at a seed company or in seed production. After successfully completing this program, you will be able to execute the different steps in developing new cultivars: 1) determine the breeding aims; 2) introduce genetic variation; 3) assess selection trials and storing the data; and 4) design selection experiments for desired traits, while including disease tests. You will be able to estimate the value of the use of molecular breeding methods in breeding programs as well as be able to work with big datasets of selection data.
Study subjects Genetic variation and breeding methods; Biology of seed production; Breeding for resistance; Experimental design and analysis of field trial data; Plant breeding in the Netherlands, Molecular breeding; Data analysis; Clonal propagation and in vitro; Plant breeding in international context.
Course objectives The student should be able to operate as an assistant breeder and/or research assistant in breeding or seed production or, and as the program aims that the student has more knowledge and skills in the all aspects of plant breeding to be able to operate as a professional in that field.
