Course summary Design and manage the breeding plan and on-farm-artificial insemination management for a pig farm. Maximize farm fertility results in order to achieve good piglets production.
Course description Focus of this programme is on achieving maximum number of piglets born alive through a good breeding plan and on-farm-AI. The programme contains theory on how to develop a breeding plan for your farm, insight in the fertility of your sows and on optimisation of your fertility results. Practical classes on insemination and pregnancy detection. Quite some time is allocated for the theory and practice of timing of the inseminations. Practical classes on collection of semen, assessing the semen quality and on the making of the doses of semen for use on farm. Knowledge on pig behaviour and the ability to monitor pigs is also necessary to draw conclusions concerning the fertility, moment of insemination and performance of the farm. Selection of sows to cull and selection of new breeding stock is covered. The focus also implies that one should be a discussion partner for stakeholders like managers, veterinarians and AI staff . A well-motivated plan for implementation of a breeding plan and the start for on-farm-AI for a pig farm is written.

Course objectives The student understands the relevance of a good breeding plan and is able to develop and improve such a plan for a sow farm. The student is able to collect, assess and dilute semen in a proper way. The student is able to inseminate a sow at the right time in the right way.
