Aquatic Ecosystems: Processes and Applications

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

Certificate / Diploma Short course Delft

Course description

Qualification Certificate
Field of study Agriculture and environment
Course summary A mesocosm experiment will be used to analyse effects of eutrophication in shallow lakes, to familiarise participants with ecological research techniques and to develop a critical scientific approach.
Course description The best way to study ecology is to get hands-on experience, i.e. to carry out experiments. The focus of this module is on obtaining practical experience and ready-to-use skills in analysing processes in aquatic ecosystems. Practical work will be supported by lectures and reading of scientific papers. After successful completion of this module participants will be able to: • formulate research questions and set-up experiments in aquatic systems; • conduct experimental mesocosm research, including statistical data analysis and reporting/presentation; • evaluate the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. To reach these objectives a mesocosm experiment will be used to analyse the effects of eutrophication in shallow lakes and to familiarise participants with techniques that are common in ecological research. Ample attention will be paid to the development of a critical scientific approach, including study design, statistical analysis and data presentation. Lectures on ecological processes and human impacts on aquatic ecosystems will provide the necessary theoretical background. Assessment will be based on a written individual report and oral presentation
Study subjects Mesocosm experiments on lake eutrophication; data analysis; written and oral presentation of scientific results; literature study; human impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
Course objectives To provide scientists and managers with practical experience and ready-to-use skills in analyzing processes in aquatic ecosystems and with the proper tools to integrate ecological knowledge into management of these systems.
