Course summary The main goal is to familiarise the participants with the design of layout of a port as well as the port related structures in the port area and offshore, such as breakwaters and berthing facilities.
Course description In this short course, the main focus is on the difference between alternative types of breakwaters and governing factors for their selection, the engineering design of breakwaters from conceptual to detailed and the preparation of layouts and detailed cross-sections. In order to achieve these goals, this course contains a real based exercise and participants will be asked to design the breakwaters of a port and defend their design in front of a group of experts. Meanwhile an overview of the use of physical models in design of coastal structures including outline of the factors determining the design of scale models, reproduction of various hydraulic phenomena and scale effects will be given. Also in this course the physical structures and vessels used in the offshore industry will be reviewed.

Course objectives Be able to design breakwaters, from conceptual to detailed, and prepare layouts and detailed cross-sections; Have an overview of structures and vessels used in the offshore industry and their behaviour; Understand how to design a scale model to reproduce hydraulic phenomena; The course can be attended separately or in combination with Coastal and Port Structures II.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs.
