Course summary The goal of the short course is to familiarise the participants with the design of a port and port related structures in the port area or offshore such as breakwaters and berthing facilities.
Course description In this short course, the main focus is on the difference between alternative types of breakwaters and governing factors for their selection, the engineering design of breakwaters from conceptual to detailed and the preparation of layouts and detailed cross-sections. Also the application of the submerged breakwater and the effect of construction of breakwaters on the adjacent coastline will be discussed. In order to achieve these goals, this course contains a real based exercise and participants will be asked to design the breakwaters of a port and defend their design in front of a group of experts. Meanwhile an overview of the use of physical models in design of coastal structures including outline of the factors determining the design of scale models, reproduction of various hydraulic phenomena and scale effects will be given. Also in this course the physical structures and vessels used in the offshore industry will be reviewed.
Study subjects Marine structures; Port Planning, Excursion Port of Rotterdam and Maeslantkering.
Course objectives Have an insight into the design and construction of offshore berthing structures. Application in a design excercise. Know the basic principles for the preparation of layout of a port and the various types of terminals, know how to apply the planning process. The course can be attended separately or in combination with Coastal and Port Structures I.
