Course summary The course introduces basic concepts of water cooperation, conflict prevention and mitigation, and provides negotiation skills and conflict management training.
Course description This course is jointly developed and offered by UNESCO-IHE and UNESCO’s programme ‘From Potential Conflict to Cooperation Potential (PCCP)’. It is designed for present and future water manager, decision makers and others involved in Integrated Water Resources Management. They will be introduced to the basic concepts of negotiation processes, determinants of conflict behavior, conflict situations and handling modes as well as methods of effective negotiation; assessments of personal negotiating styles. The course consists of interactive lectures, Case studies, Role-plays, Assignments and a possible field trip to Peace Palace and the International Court of Justice.
Study subjects Alternative dispute resolution approaches; concepts for analysing processes of conflict resolution; conflict resolution processes design; negotiation techniques and styles; international negotiation processes; cases of transboundary water conflicts and cooperation.
Course objectives Upon completion of the module, participants will be able to: analyze conflicts related to water; analyze a negotiation process; design negotiation processes related to shared water resources; apply skills and tools for water conflict management.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training.
