Course summary The purpose of this short course is to introduce the students to theoretical and practical aspects of water and environmental resources management from a legal and policy perspective.
Course description The overall goal of this course is to introduce mid-level decision makers, technical experts and professional trainers and researchers in relevant technical and managerial fields of work in both the public and private sector to the challenges of how water and environmental resources can be managed sustainably, and what the advantages and disadvantages of different instruments and institutional approaches are. The course has a national and international component. Interactive lectures, practices in stakeholder interviews and analysis, negotiation exercises, role-plays, workshops, case studies, the internet and audio-visual means will be used in this course.
Study subjects Changing Patterns of Global Governance; Introduction to National & International Law; Introduction to the UN System; Introduction to the Law of Treaties; General, Innovative Legal and Policy Instruments; Principles of Dispute Resolution; Contract Management; Water Allocation and Water Rights; Shared Vision and Strategy Development.
Course objectives Participants become familiar with the concept of multi-level governance and the relationship between national and international legal and policy systems. They will be able to describe the fundamentals of international and comparative water and environmental legislation, and the relationship of both with regard to the application of principles of Integrated Water Resources & Environmental Management.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 160 countries. More than 175 PhD candidates were promoted. IHE Delft is at the centre of a vast international network of water related institutions, and functions as an interface between knowledge networks and centres, public and private sector organizations, scientific and professional associations and other members of the international water community. The Institute runs a substantial number of joint MSc programmes implemented in partnership with universities around the globe. These joint programmes combine the strengths of the collaborating institutions and deliver either multiple degrees or a joint degree.
