Course summary This short course aims to provide theoretical background and practical expertise in decentralized water supply and sanitation systems suitable for the small towns, peri-urban areas and urban slums.
Course description Capacity building in planning, design and operation and maintenance of decentralised water supply and sanitation systems is necessary to achieve the UN MDGs on water supply and sanitation, specifically in the urban poor areas of the developing countries and the countries in transition. This short course deals with and integrates water supply systems, sanitation systems and management aspects. The course consists of lectures, workshops, exercises, case studies, films, a field trip, a laboratory session and assignments. At the end of this course, the participant will be familiar with different technologies and management aspects of low-cost, decentralised water abstraction, water treatment and sustainable sanitation including nutrient reuse in agriculture in accordance with the new WHO guidelines for safe use of excreta and grey-water in agriculture. The course will enable the participants to prepare a basic engineering or concept design for relevant technologies, and they will be able to facilitate planning, financing, implementation, operation and maintenance of decentralised water supply and sanitation infrastructures based on stakeholder participation and community management.
