Course summary The activated sludge model (ASM) is applied for many different wastewater treatment systems, using AQUASIM as computer tool. BioWin is used to model an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant.
Course description These first 2 weeks focus on the general concept of modelling biochemical processes in wastewater treatment and modelling of activated sludge wastewater treatment systems. In more detail the 2 weeks cover: • Kinetics, stoichiometry, mass balances, hydraulics and matrix notations) • Introduction of the computer software AQUASIM • An overview of existing IWA models (e.g. ASM1, ASM2d), ASM3, TUD(P) models. Procedures for characterization of wastewater and sludge • Protocol for development of calibrated activated sludge models • Case studies on modelling wastewater treatment processes using AQUASIM • Exercise on the optimization of an existing activated sludge wastewater treatment plant using mass balance calculations and the computer software BioWin. The last week of the module deals with modelling of other wastewater treatment systems by adaptation of ASM or applying ADM (Anaerobic Digestion Model). In more detail this week covers modelling of: • Natural systems (ponds, wetlands) using AQUASIM • Membrane bioreactors using AQUASIM • Biofilm systems using AQUASIM • Anaerobic reactors using BioWin
