Course description The course is designed for professionals actively involved in wastewater treatment. They may be working in organizations responsible for waste water treatment. The target group is also those who have an interest in onsite wastewater treatment for small communities. Contents: Introduction to Constructed Wetlands and basic principles, with History and philosophy of constructed wetlands; Introduction to wetlands; Basic principles of treatment; Case study Nakivubo; Types of constructed wetlands; Use of constructed wetlands for various types of wastewater Design of constructed wetlands, with Technology Selection; Model framework ; Constructed wetland sizing; Practical design aspects Operation and maintenance, with Starting up a constructed wetland; Operation and maintenance; Economics and reuse Case studies, with Case study Texel, Constructed wetlands in Brazil; Constructed wetlands for treating paper mill wastewater; Constructed wetlands in arid climates And finally an Assignment on a design of a specific wetland
Study subjects Module 1 - Introduction to Wetlands for Water Quality; Module 2 - Importance of Wetlands; Module 3 – Natural Wetlands for Water Treatment; Module 4 - Constructed Wetlands for Water Treatment; Module 5 - Final Assignment.
Course objectives To enable the participants at the end of the course to make a proper design of their own wetland system for wastewater treatment.
