Water Quality Assessment and Monitoring

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

Certificate / Diploma Short course Delft

Course description

Qualification Certificate
Field of study Agriculture and environment
Course summary Addresses the monitoring cycle: monitoring network design, field+laboratory procedures, statistical data processing. Also insight is given in aquatic ecotoxicology and water quality modelling.
Course description In large parts of the world, rivers and lakes are increasingly polluted. Evaluation of the physical, chemical and biological water quality is essential for the abatement of freshwater pollution. The course will give training on sustainable water quality assessment programmes. In "Water quality monitoring", attention is given to river and lake pollution levels, and the ways to monitor these, following the "why", "how" and "what" questions. Optimization programmes, practical field and laboratory work, as well as Quality assurance, are all part of the curriculum. "Data handling and presentation" discusses the basic statistical techniques for data processing. In "Aquatic Ecotoxicology", biological and ecotoxicological methods of water quality assessment are discussed, as well as risk assessment procedures. "Water quality modelling" will aim at modelling concepts and applications, e.g. response of dissolved oxygen in a river to organic pollution loadings. Excursions will be made to Water quality monitoring and modelling Institutions. Participants will apply newly gained knowledge in a small group assignment on designing a sustainable water quality monitoring programme.
Study subjects Water Quality, including ecotoxicology and modelling. Water quality monitoring in rivers and lakes. Case study: EU-WFD. Statistical data analysis. Optimization programmes. Lab and field work. Concepts and some examples of groundwater quality monitoring. Excursions in the field of Water Quality Monitoring and modelling.
Course objectives To acquaint participants with the principles and techniques used in fresh water quality description, monitoring and assessment, and, as an introduction, in groundwater quality monitoring.
