Course summary The overall objective of this module is to provide participants with an understanding of policy and management challenges with reference to peri-urban sanitation services.
Course description Urban sanitation services in developing countries pose serious challenges: policy makers, city managers and practitioners have an expressed desire for learning material to support capacity development. To respond to this need IHE Delft has collaborated with experts drawn from partner institutes in Netherlands, the U.K. and Africa, South America and Asia to compile reading material covering topics of policy, planning and methodological aspects of sanitation services in peri-urban regions. International knowledge institutes are also engaged in this effort by identifying case studies/material from developing countries.
Study subjects Trends in Urbanization and Water Management Related to Sanitation Services; Framework for Integrated Management of Water Cycle; Contemporary Apporoches to Sewage Management; Policy Issues Related to Institutional Coordination; Financing Mechanisms and Partnerships; Methodological Approaches to Equip Water Professionals for Improved Sanitation Services.
Course objectives Understand/Recognize the links between water allocation and sanitation in urban areas, changes in policy, climate, variability and sanitation management; analyze institutional and technological changes; understand the role of public administration, donor interventions, local politics and information flows in facilitating improved access to sanitation services; data gathering and policy analysis.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs.
