Advanced Water Transport and Distribution
IHE Delft Institute for Water Education
Certificate / Diploma Short course Delft
Course description
Qualification | Certificate |
Field of study | Agriculture and environment |
Course summary | The course aims to introduce advanced methods and tools used in design, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems to engineers and scientists with keen interest in modern technologies. |
Course description | The series of lectures is followed by an integrated design assignment based on the preliminary developed case network. This design is further improved with the help of state-of-the-art network modelling software (WaterGEMS of Bentley Software), focusing to GIS, water quality modelling and network reliability assessment. Next to the exercise, the students attend various computer software demonstrations and will follow a fieldtrip to one of the water companies in the Netherlands. Prior to the fieldtrip, a series of lectures is organised discussing modern O&M practices in this country. The participant's performance is assessed by evaluation of an individual assignment consisting of four components: water quality, GIS, reliability assessment and Water Hammer (individual report, 25% for each component). The lecturing materials include: (1) N. Trifunović – Introduction to Urban Water Distribution, by Taylor & Francis and (2) S. Sharma – Corrosion of Pipe Materials, lecture notes UNESCO-IHE. Electronic materials include slide presentations (MS PowerPoint), design assignments, WaterGEMS network modelling software and spreadsheet hydraulic lessons (MS Excel). |
Study subjects | Water Quality in Distribution Networks: Pipe corrosion, water quality modelling. Advanced Water Distribution Modelling: Calibration and failure analysis. GIS in Water Distribution: Interactions with network modelling packages. Introduction to Water Hammer: Simulations and protection strategies. O&M Practices in Water Distribution: Monitoring, maintenance plans, emergency supply, asset management. |
Course objectives | The course participants will be able to assess water quality in distribution networks and suggest preventive and reactive measures, understand the theory of transient flows and plan the measures to control them, apply GIS-based techniques for sustainable network management, and apply state-of-the-art network software to develop a reliability-based and cost effective design. |

About the institution
Department | IHE Delft |
Information about the institution | IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 160 countries. More than 175 PhD candidates were promoted. IHE Delft is at the centre of a vast international network of water related institutions, and functions as an interface between knowledge networks and centres, public and private sector organizations, scientific and professional associations and other members of the international water community. The Institute runs a substantial number of joint MSc programmes implemented in partnership with universities around the globe. These joint programmes combine the strengths of the collaborating institutions and deliver either multiple degrees or a joint degree. |
