Course summary The aim of the course is to get practical experience in setting up and running a morphodynamic model with Delft3D including grid generation, sediment transport formulae and waves.
Course description The aim of the course is to get practical experience in setting up and running a morphodynamic model with Delft3D. This includes the generation of grids, interpolation methodologies of bathymetric samples, application of different sediment transport formulae, application of bed composition model, short waves processes, bank erosion algorithms and morphodynamic updating techniques. The course provides background lectures on the hydrodynamic equations, numerical techniques and sediment transport fomulae. However, emphasis is put on training students in setting up their own Delft3D model. In addition, the course provides lectures on case studies and comparison with observed morphodynamic development. At the end of the course the participant is able to setup a morphodynamic model related to realistic case studies. The student will become aware of the possibilities and limitations of process-based, numerical modeling and its potential for application.

Course objectives Upon completion of the course, the student is able to understand the principles of modeling morphodynamic developments using the numerical software package Delft3D ( with emphasis on the flow module and the morphological module) and to apply this knowledge to simple but realistic cases.
