Course summary The 3-week course, held in English at UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands, is for professionals and academics involved in irrigation system management in various government and non-government organizations.
Course description Service oriented management of irrigation systems (SOMIS) is crucial to improved and sustainable performance of irrigation systems. Central to this is adoption of a user-centered and user-driven approach for effective operation, maintenance and management of irrigation systems. The course covers: i) basic principles, significance, and concepts; ii) key activities and processes of service oriented management in varied settings; and iii) physical, economic, and institutional requisites including monitoring & evaluation and benchmarking. The course make use of interactive teaching, workshops, case studies, exercises and excursion to water management services in Netherlands. The participants will learn to: • Formulate policy objectives for irrigation development and management; • Identify water delivery arrangements including suitable flow control amenable to objectives; • levels of water delivery service and associated costs; • legislative, organizational and financial requirements; • service agreements considering cost recovery and accountability; • design asset management programs and implementation plans; and • monitor and evaluate system performance.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training.
