MSc in Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

Master Postgraduate Delft

Course description

Qualification Master of Science
Field of study Engineering
Course summary You will develop scientific and engineering knowledge needed to design and implement projects for sustainable use of river systems and their resources, learning about the design of hydraulic structure
Course description The need for food, energy, flood risk management and domestic and industrial water supply requires that water will be used and managed more efficiently than in the past. Traditional river engineering has had serious consequences for riverine ecosystems and land use, causing damage to flora and fauna and sometimes exacerbating floods and droughts. The Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development specialization educates engineers involved in design and implementation of projects for sustainable use of river systems and their resources: fresh water, floodplain space and sediments. Emphasis is laid on different scales of water projects (catchments, river stretches and floodplains). Hydraulic structures, river morphodynamics and flood management are the main focus of this specialization.
Study subjects Hydrology; River Hydraulics; Soil mechanics; Rock mechanics; River Dynamics; GIS and Remote Sensing; River Modelling; Water Resources Management; River Basin Development; River Systems Management; EIA; Storage Works; Hydropower; River Structures; Flood Management; River morphodynamics; River rehabilitation; Group Work; Research Methods; MSc Research; technical visits
Course objectives •Understand physical processes and natural phenomena in river basin systems, the effect of human interference in river basins, such as river structures and training works, and the management of floods; •Master the major hydraulic methodologies and applications for the design of (large) river structures and river modelling techniques with regard to data collection, processing and analysis;
ECTS credits 106.00

About the institution

Department IHE Delft
Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 160 countries. More than 175 PhD candidates were promoted. IHE Delft is at the centre of a vast international network of water related institutions, and functions as an interface between knowledge networks and centres, public and private sector organizations, scientific and professional associations and other members of the international water community. The Institute runs a substantial number of joint MSc programmes implemented in partnership with universities around the globe. These joint programmes combine the strengths of the collaborating institutions and deliver either multiple degrees or a joint degree.
