Course description Human beings interact with the natural water cycle in two main forms: the abstraction of water from the natural cycle to provide a water supply for human life, maintain a standard of living and satisfy the needs of industry and the changing of the natural surface with impermeable surfaces that divert rainwater away from the local natural system of drainage. These interactions give rise to two types of water that require drainage and resulted in the need of drainage systems especially in urban areas. The purposes of urban drainage systems include maintaining public health and safety, flood control, waste transport, water collection and recycling. Cities now house half of the world population, consume three quarter of its resources, and yet occupy only two per cent of the land surface. By the middle of the next century, it is predicted that seventy per cent of the global population will live in urban areas. Properly designed and operated urban drainage systems with its interactions with other urban water systems are crucial element of healthy and safe urban environment. Introduction to urban drainage and sewer systems: o Describe the purpose, need and importance of urban drainage and discuss the challenges of modern urban drainage, explain why it is relevant to understand changes in water cycle due to urbanization in the context of environmental security, illustrate the changes take place in the hydrological cycle at small scale, describe the influence of these changes on the total water cycle and list the adverse implications of the changes in the water cy
Course objectives The course aims at providing an understanding of the basic principles and knowledge on planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance and management of urban drainage systems, on the use of modelling for simulation of urban drainage systems and on advanced topics related to urban drainage.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs.
