Wastewater Treatment Plants Design and Engineering

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

Certificate / Diploma Short course Delft

Course description

Qualification Certificate
Field of study Engineering
Course summary Process technology selection, hydraulic and engineering principles and considerations for the design of wastewater treatment and sanitation systems.
Course description This course provides the fundamentals for the selection and design of the most appropriate, cost-effective and sustainable wastewater or sanitation treatment system. It provides the basics on technology selection and costing and engineering economics for the analysis, evaluation and comparison of different treatment alternatives. At the engineering level, it covers relevant principles and fundamentals for the determination of the engineering process lay-outs, flow diagrams and design of hydraulic structures and hydraulic profiles. Based on the principles of each process technology, the course includes engineering considerations for the design of activated sludge systems, anaerobic wastewater treatment systems, land-based systems such as ponds and constructed wetlands and onsite sanitation systems.
Study subjects 1. Technology selection 2. Costing 3. Engineering economics 4. Engineering process lay-outs and flow diagrams 5. Hydraulic design 6. Design and engineering of activated sludge and anaerobic systems 7. Design and engineering of onsite sanitation systems 8. Design and engineering of land-based systems
Course objectives • Select the most suitable and cost-effective wastewater treatment process technology (among the most widely applied anaerobic, aerobic, land-based and on-site systems) to treat certain wastewater stream given its composition and characteristics and taking into account the required effluent standards. • Carry out a preliminary design of a wastewater treatment system (based on the most widely applied anaerobic, aerobic, land-based and on-site systems) including the engineering process lay-out, hy

About the institution

Department IHE Delft
Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training. Since 1957 the Institute has provided graduate education to more than 15,000 water professionals from over 160 countries. More than 175 PhD candidates were promoted. IHE Delft is at the centre of a vast international network of water related institutions, and functions as an interface between knowledge networks and centres, public and private sector organizations, scientific and professional associations and other members of the international water community. The Institute runs a substantial number of joint MSc programmes implemented in partnership with universities around the globe. These joint programmes combine the strengths of the collaborating institutions and deliver either multiple degrees or a joint degree.

In short, the following rules apply:

  • The “EU/EEA rate” is the regular fee for students from within the EU/EEA.
  • The “non-EU/EEA rate” is the rate for students from outside the EU/EEA.
  • The “institutional rate” is for all students who have already obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree and who want to start a second programme leading to a degree at the same level or at a lower level.
  • Note that FT, PT and D stand for "full-time", "part-time" and "dual", respectively.

Make sure you contact your institution to find out what rate applies to you. The rates listed here are estimates.
