Course summary Interdisciplinary program that brings a theoretical and historical understanding of conflict and peace dynamics and frames issues of water security in the broader context of environmental issues.
Course description The programme will adopt an interdisciplinary approach and provide participants with a theoretical and historical understanding of conflict and peace dynamics and frame issues of water security and cooperation in the broader context of environmental issues. The programme will provide tools (methodological, diplomatic and legal instruments) and training in a number of skills, such as negotiation skills. Additionally the programme will offer the unique opportunity to undertake fieldwork and hands-on experience in Costa Rica, The Netherlands and USA. Participants will be exposed to different case studies, involving diverse challenges and contexts at different scales.
Study subjects The following disciplines and fields are integrated in the programme: • Socio-hydrology: dialectic between social and hydrological processes; • Peace and conflict studies; • Environmental security; • Water governance and water conflict management; • Collaborative research and writing; • Negotiation skills; and • Law and diplomacy.
Course objectives - Articulate the complexities of socio-natural processes - Compare theories and dimensions of conflict and its avoidance, management and resolution - Critically analyse water disputes - Use an interdisciplinary approach to assess conflict management tools and techniques - Apply conflict management tools and design conflict resolution processes - Formulate conclusions and recommendations

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs. It offers degree programmes, short courses, online courses and tailor-made training.   1. preferably 2 or 3 years of practical or research work experience.
  2. undergraduate degree (academic bachelor level or higher) in a relevant discipline such as political science, economics, law, hydrology, engineering, geography or water resources.
