Course description Throughout the world irrigation systems face similar challenges in terms of sustainable maintenance and operation, such as accountability and financial resources management. Systems often get stuck in the build-neglect-rebuild cycle for which there are no quick or easy solutions. This course looks into socio-technical aspects, and the underlying social, cultural and political processes. You will learn about different objectives, tasks, modalities and challenges in irrigation and drainage management. Topics include management tasks, management arrangements, interventions, irrigation performance and irrigation water accounting. You are triggered to come up with own examples, challenges and think of possible solutions.
Study subjects to be completed 2
Course objectives 1) evaluate objectives, tasks and types of irrigation management arrangements and its implications for performance; 2) demonestrate the role of property creation for the management of irrigation and drainage systems; 3) apply concepts of irrigation performance assessment; 4) explain the key concepts of water accounting in irrigation schemes; 5) use the IWMI water accounting framework.

Information about the institution IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and the only institution in the UN system to confer accredited MSc degrees and promote PhDs.
