Course description Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to: • Explain the importance and meaning of general concepts related to rehabilitation of rivers and floodplains, including integrated river basin management, the ecosystem approach, and ecosystem functions and services; • Explain ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration concepts, and link them to the physical, biological and ecological processes in rivers; • Determine the technical principles and engineering tools needed for river and floodplain rehabilitation; • Assess the needs for developing an effective river rehabilitation plan; • Translate their understanding of the river ecosystem, the technical principles and tools, stakeholder participation and river rehabilitation planning into an integrated plan for river rehabilitation, with relevant objectives and measures for implementation.
Study subjects The course begins with consideration of river system components and how they interact to provide ecological functions and ecosystem services. The next topic examines techniques to assess restoration needs in river basins, engage stakeholders, and begin the planning process. Lastly, the course examines some engineering techniques to rehabilitate and restore physical and ecological processes.
Course objectives • Explain ecosystem service and management concepts for rehabilitation of rivers; • Explain rehabilitation concepts, linking them to physical, biological and ecological processes; • Determine technical tools needed for rehabilitation; • Assess the needs for developing an effective river rehabilitation plan; • Apply principles learned in river rehabilitation planning for an integrated restoration plan.
