Course summary This course trains health workers who wish to work in Low and Middle Income countries. It is also the Core course for the Masters in International Health (MIH).
Course description In the Netherlands, the NTC forms part of a post-graduate training programme for physicians leading to a diploma in tropical medicine. Other components of the programme include residencies in surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology. More information can be obtained from the NVTG website. Other professionals can take the NTC as a stand-alone course or as part of the Master in International Health (MIH). The NTC is jointly organized by the Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre (VU) in Amsterdam, the University Hospital of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT).
Study subjects The core course prepares health professionals for health care work in low and middle income countries. The course is composed of five modules: Introduction Module, Determinants of Health, Health Problems, Health Systems, Basic Research Methods.
Course objectives Critically collect, analyse and appraise qualitative and quantitative data for the improvement of health(care) in low and middle income societies. Identify and analyse determinants of health and major health problems of populations in a cross-disciplinary perspective. Plan sustainable improvements of health systems considering cultural settings.

About the institution

Information about the institution KIT is a not-for-profit knowledge and expertise organisation for international and intercultural cooperation. Through master programmes, short courses and institutional support, KIT equips health professionals to be leaders in addressing public health challenges around the world. KIT has offered training programs on international public health since 1963. Currently this includes two International Masters Programs and a wide range of short courses and online courses. The courses respond to current global developments in the health field. KIT’s courses are known for their practical applicability, the multidisciplinary approach and the interactive, participatory training methods. Courses at KIT are followed by health professionals from all over the world. KIT’s Masters courses are given in cooperation with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and are accredited the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). In addition advanced courses are all accredited by TropEd, an international network of institutions for higher education in international health.

  1. Academic training at least to the level of a bachelor’s degree in medicine or any paramedical science.
  2. Two years of relevant work experience. Proven proficiency in spoken and written English. Computer literacy is expected.
