Course summary The MA specialisation Global Political Economy at Leiden University provides you with a cutting-edge understanding of the world economy and its political and social foundations.
Course description This Master's programme has a multidisciplinary approach allowing you to explore and develop your own interests. It will provide you with a rigorous understanding of the global political economy and different approaches to its study as well as ideas and tools for the analysis of critical global issues. As a student in the Global Political Economy specialisation, you will address such key concerns as the determinants of economic growth, poverty, and inequality; the changing organization, operation, and logics of global industries; environmental sustainability and equity challenges arising from features and effects of global capitalism; and implications of the world market for the vitality and future of democracy. You will benefit from the close contacts between the University and national and international government institutions in The Hague, as well as the unique wealth of area studies at Leiden University.

Admission

Admission requirements
  1. For 2019 - 2020: A good academic record as an indicator of academic excellence, demonstrated by a grade of at least 7.0 (Dutch grading system) for the Bachelor's thesis. From 2020 - 2021: A good academic record as an indicator of academic excellence, demonstrated by an average grade of at least 7.0 (Dutch grading system) in the Bachelor programme.
  2. Applicants should have completed components at the bachelor's level equivalent to at least 30 EC in the field of International Studies with comparable content and course objectives (e.g. Global History (5 EC), Introduction to Area Studies (5 EC), Globalisation, Culture and Language (5 EC), International Economics (5 EC), International Politics (5 EC), Politics of a specific area (i.e. Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America, Russia and Eurasia, South and Southeast Asia) (5 EC)).
  3. A bachelor's degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor's degree, in the field of social sciences, humanities, law or economics.
  4. Demonstrable motivation to study and familiarity with the MA programme and the specific specialisation(s).
