Course summary This training program aims to advance your knowledge and skills in research methodology, thereby preparing you for designing and executing your own empirical research.
Course description The course consists of five modules. The first module “Introduction to Research Methodology” focuses on drafting a solid problem statement and involves literature search and review. The second module “Qualitative Research Methods” includes lectures and assignments on case study designs, interviews, focus groups and textual analysis amongst others. The third module “Quantitative Data Collection” is an introductory course on survey designs. In the fourth module “Quantitative Data Analysis” you learn about statistical techniques to analyze such quantitative data. In the final module you work on your 10-page research proposal with lectures on ‘best practices’.

Course objectives Whether in business, government, higher education or civil society, research competencies and skills are essential for the effective conduct of high quality research and for interpreting research results for evidence-based decision-making. The development of research competencies is particularly relevant for (junior) academics whose career is increasingly dependent on their research output and for decision-makers in developing countries who engage in evidence-based management and policy design.
