Course summary The world has seen many violent conflicts within and between nation states. You will study (inter)national conflict, war and the physical and mental borders that come along with these.
Course description This unique programme combines political geography with conflict management. You will study (inter)national conflicts, war and terrorism. We will focus on the backgrounds, contexts, sources and territorial aspects - imperialism, geopolitics, failing states, religions, (national) identities, discrimination, resources, borders - and the management and resolution - good governance, border management, humanitarian aid, development aid, diplomacy, peace operations. You will become familiar with the political and social construction of conflicts, territories and identities, as well as with the theory and practice of (inter)national conflict management. You will study these in theory but also in practice at the hot-spots of current conflicts. As a graduate you qualify for jobs in journalism, research, civil, international relations, security sector, defence -, international organisations and non-governmental organisations as well as research. The Master's in Conflicts, Territories and Identities is a specialisation of the Master's programme in Human Geography in collaboration with the Centre for International Conflict Analysis & Management (CICAM).
Study subjects During the programme of Conflicts, Territories and Identities you will study (inter)national conflicts, war and terrorism. The focus for these issues will be on the backgrounds, contexts and sources -imperialism, geopolitics, failing states, religions, (national) identities, discrimination, resources, borders- and management and resolution: good governance, border management, humanitarian aid, development aid, diplomacy, peace operations and overall, historical development of cases.
Course objectives The objective of the Master's track in Conflicts, Territories and Identities is for students to gain knowledge about the political and social construction of conflicts, territories and identities, and also about the theory and practice of (inter)national conflict management. The final goal is for students to be able to apply scholarly ideas and concepts to real life conflict situations. This generates an opportunity to find a jobs in governmental as well as in international institutions.

Admission requirements
  1. A Dutch Bachelor's degree (or equivalent, from a research university) from a geography related discipline, such as Spatial Planning, Geography, International Relations, Social Sciences, as evaluated by the Examination Board or another relevant bachelor degree with at least 24 EC in conflict studies and/or political geography.
  2. A list of your grades obtained during previous education.
  3. A letter of motivation.
