Course summary In this course, participants learn how local governments can plan, finance and deliver services to their citizens in an effectively and inclusive way.
Course description Local public services, including drinking water, sanitation, waste management and basic health care, have a huge impact on our daily lives and well-being. Unfortunately, the poor often lack access to these important services. In this regard, local governments have a huge potential in improving the living conditions of the poor. In this two-week course questions will be addressed such as: How can you ensure that basic services also reach the poorest people? How can the financial management of services be set up in a transparent and democratic way? How can partnerships with NGOs and the private sector help local governments to better deal with challenges? The course equips you with a number of practical and analytical tools and brings you new ideas to conceive and implement inclusive policies and projects on pro-poor local service delivery.

Information about the institution The Hague Academy for Local Governance organises practice-oriented training courses and knowledge exchange activities for people involved in local governance. Mayors and civil servants are welcome to take part in our programmes, as are consultants and other professionals working on strengthening local democracy worldwide. Joining our training programmes means experiencing governance from a typically local point of view!
