Biomedical Sciences

Maastricht University

Bachelor Undergraduate Maastricht

Course description

Qualification Bachelor of Science
Field of study Health care, social services and care services
Course summary The three-year, English-taught Biomedical Sciences (BMS) bachelor explores how the human body works in day-to-day life, during periods of illness, while ageing and during peak (sports) performance.
Course description You learn step-by-step about the biological processes: from the molecular, cell and tissue level, to the most complex organs, and ultimately the body as a whole. However, you also look at the body's response to environmental factors (e.g. diet, exercise) and unhealthy behaviour. The knowledge you acquire during the programme can be used to improve health and the performance of the human body under various circumstances. BMS has a different emphasis than Medicine. In medicine, your objective is to heal individual patients. As a biomedical scientist, you don't treat patients. Instead, you use scientific knowledge to gain insight into the processes underlying human health and disease. During the bachelor's, you'll spend quite some time in the lab for your practicals. Biomedical Sciences is such a vast and diverse field that it is impossible to know everything about it. It is for this precise reason that BMS has been set up to not only cover a wide range of topics but also to be extremely flexible. You choose the themes and course units that best match your interests, talents and ambitions, so that you can thoroughly prepare yourself for your future career.
Study subjects The flexible curriculum of the bachelor's programme in Biomedical Sciences contains an unfolding character, starting with mandatory courses for all students, succeeded by both an elective and minor period, and concluded with the writing of a thesis. The programme offers a great deal of free choice, which allows you to develop your own profile within the field of biomedical sciences. You will be appointed a personal mentor who will counsel you in this process.
Course objectives Next to biomedical content, the programme explicitly focuses on training and developing academic and professional competences. This is what Maastricht University graduates are renowned for internationally! These competences will prepare you for your future career and give you an advantage when entering the labour market where exactly these competences are desired.
