Course summary As an applied mathematician, you occupy a key position in the scientific world. Through mathematical models, you grasp the essence of a problem and see links between seemingly unrelated phenomena.
Course description This Master’s programme is as much about attitude and motivation as it is about pure mathematics. Applied mathematics has largely developed in response to the need to formulate and solve problems in a diversity of fields. In short, it is the language of scientific communication par excellence. The programme offers an environment where you can specialize in modern mathematical techniques, working closely with other academic disciplines such as physics, (industrial) engineering, logistics and computer sciences. You will be considered a junior member of the research department and actively participate in your supervisor’s research programme. Applied Mathematics – or engineering mathematics as it is sometimes called - distinguishes itself from pure mathematics in that it draws inspiration for its own development from interaction with related fields such as physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, economics-, and computer sciences, to name but a few. A Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics will open a great many doors in your future career. Regardless of whether you opt to work for a company, a consulting firm, a research institute or a university.
Study subjects The MSc AM programme has a nominal study length of two years (120 EC). Specialisations: Operational Research, Mathematical Physics & Computational Mechanics, Mathematics and Applications of Signals & Systems.
Course objectives This programme focusses on improving the proficiency in modern applied mathematics and mathematical modeling in the area of operations research and in the area of physical phenomena of graduates in mathematics or engineering and professionals.
