Course description | UCU specializes in liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education, and students compose a personal curriculum from 200 different courses in humanities, science and social science. The UCU approach is personal: classes are small and participation is actively encouraged. The admissions process is highly selective: students are admitted on the basis of academic excellence, but an international focus, social engagement and extracurricular pursuits are of equal importance. All 650 students (40% international) live on campus in the historic city of Utrecht. |
Study subjects | A UCU education is characterized by its broad and interdisciplinary nature. As a student, therefore, you design your own curriculum. This means that the curriculum does not have a fixed structure; instead you combine different courses to assemble a personal study programme, chosing from over 200 courses in: Humanities: History, Art History, Literature & Classics, Linguistics, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Performing Arts, Chinese Language & Culture. Course objectives | In the first year you explore the academic world and the various academic disciplines. You take academic skills courses that help develop writing, presentation and methodological skills. Before the start of the second year you declare a major in one of the three departments. You take courses at the intermediate 2- and advanced 3-level. In the third year efforts are focused on gaining sufficient disciplinary knowledge to apply for a Master's program or a job, culminating in a research thesis. |
