Course summary University College Utrecht (UCU) is an international honors college of Utrecht University (Shanghai ranking: best Dutch university) in the Netherlands.
Course description UCU specializes in liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education, and students compose a personal curriculum from 200 different courses in humanities, science and social science. The UCU approach is personal: classes are small and participation is actively encouraged. The admissions process is highly selective: students are admitted on the basis of academic excellence, but an international focus, social engagement and extracurricular pursuits are of equal importance. All 650 students (40% international) live on campus in the historic city of Utrecht.
Study subjects A UCU education is characterized by its broad and interdisciplinary nature. As a student, therefore, you design your own curriculum. This means that the curriculum does not have a fixed structure; instead you combine different courses to assemble a personal study programme, chosing from over 200 courses in: Humanities: History, Art History, Literature & Classics, Linguistics, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Performing Arts, Chinese Language & Culture. Course objectives In the first year you explore the academic world and the various academic disciplines. You take academic skills courses that help develop writing, presentation and methodological skills. Before the start of the second year you declare a major in one of the three departments. You take courses at the intermediate 2- and advanced 3-level. In the third year efforts are focused on gaining sufficient disciplinary knowledge to apply for a Master's program or a job, culminating in a research thesis.

Admission

Admission requirements
  1. Applicants must have a Dutch high school diploma at VWO level (any profile) or a foreign equivalent, such as the International Baccalaureate diploma or the British A-levels.
  2. Applicants who meet the basic requirements are invited to an interview.
  3. Since English is the official language at UCU, non-native speakers are required to demonstrate proof of proficiency. Accepted are the IELTS test, TOEFL test and Cambridge Certificate. Students with an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate diploma in English are exempted. Dutch students with a 5 VWO average of 8 or higher for English are also be exempted.
  4. The application includes a motivation letter.
  5. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and curiosity.
