Human Movement Analysis (VU Amsterdam Summer School)

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Certificate / Diploma Summer course Amsterdam

Course description

Qualification Certificate
Field of study Health care, social services and care services
Course summary Practical exploration of human movement sciences in a laboratory setting. Featuring hands-on learning at the Adidas MiCoach Performance Centre and Amsterdam Rehabilitation Research Centre.
Course description From élite sport to clinical rehabilitation, we are constantly using human movement analysis to enhance the physical capabilities of the human body. This course is a practical exploration of that topic. Following a brief general introduction to Human Movement Sciences and a number of two and three-dimensional motion-capture techniques, students move into our extensive laboratory. Fitted with force plates, treadmills, and even a climbing wall, here students collect their own data by performing biomechanical experiments. Students analyse that material using MATLAB, a world-renowned numerical computing environment. Excursions include trips to the Adidas MiCoach Performance Centre, where the Amsterdam football club Ajax uses movement analysis equipment to enhance both its youth and professional players' capabilities, and to the Amsterdam Rehabilitation Research Centre, where state-of-the-art movement analysis supports the rehabilitation of patients following strokes, spinal-cord injuries, and amputations. Students are advised to have a good working knowledge of mathematics, in particular differential and integral calculus, and an interest in working with technical software tools.
